Just read the news over at BV Lawson's excellent blog In Reference to Murder that Crime and Suspense will be shutting down at the end of the year. Presently they're closed to subs but I will let you know if they open up again so you can slip a story into one of the last issues.
Crime and Suspense is a subscription zine so the stories were only available to paying customers, but Mr. Tony Burton, the editor, has opened the archives so the stories are available to everyone. Just click on the Subscriber's Area and treat yourself to some new and old authors and their stories. Oh, and for all you Bo Fexler fans out there, check out the May/June 2008 issue. Though, it's always a bit sad when a zine goes down. Invertible and unfortunate.
You're very welcome, Clair. Yes, it is sad to see the zine shut down. Tony published a fair number of my stories in the first few years of C&S for which I'll always be grateful.
That stinks. But you have to give it up to folks like Burton who keep zines up and running for so long. Most of the time it seems like a pretty thankless task, except to the folks who read the stories and submit to the zine.

I've noticed that most zines come and go in a three to five year cycle. I think the amount of work involved in maintaining a zine just wears the editors down after a while.
Oh, I hate to see a zine close... Best of luck to Mr. Burton in his future endeavors.
Oh, naughty wicked words--phooey on the recession. I sold a story to Crime and Suspense, "Blink of an Eye" published in 2007 I think? and Tony Burton was a joy of an editor (most are, in my experience).
Especially sad seeing this one go as it's one of a handful that isn't specifically a noir or hardboiled site.
I guess we're lucky that people are willing to do all the work it entails even for 3-5 year periods. What do these editors get out of it other than a place to express their love of writing through their own hard work and support of others. Especially zines which disappear without a trace--like this one will. I am making myself depressed here so....
The up side to this is that someone will probably step up and start another one as they did when Flashing in the Gutters and MuzzleFlash went off the grid. At least there was an announcement here.
